Cambodia NewsLand Disputes in Kampong Speu
Posted by AutumnLotus on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 (17:19:51) 315 reads

VOA Khmer
Washington
14/02/2007

A group of locals representing 10 villages in Kampong Speu province say that they will form a mass demonstration, if no resolution is found regarding their claims of land disputes.

The villagers had alleged the ACO army unit of land grabbing, and claimed that they have occupied the land since 1979. Now, they have filed formal complaints to local authorities and to Prime Minister Hun Sen.

In 1993, the armored unit headquarter was erected on the land, which led to ACO demanding a 30 percent annual profit from crop harvested by local villagers.

Loy Samouth, a representative for the villagers, says that he has asked NGOs officials to resolve the issues, but so far nothing has been done.

The Human Rights Watch’s (2006) report shows that about 1000-1600 families have been forced with evictions in Phnom Penh. And in 10 provinces alone, another 1231 families have also experienced forced evictions.

Active land dispute cases are currently pending in Mondul Kiri, Kratie, Kampong Speu, and Koh Kong provinces.

Cambodia NewsNEC Removes CPP Member for Misconduct
Posted by AutumnLotus on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 (17:18:50) 295 reads

VOA Khmer
Washington
14/02/2007

The National Election Committee (NEC) has removed one of its representatives in Kampong Cham province, for violating NEC’s rules and regulations, said an official Wednesday.

Sun Lay Sin, who is a member of the Cambodian People Party (CPP), worked in NEC’s legal services based in Kampong Cham, was fired before the end of his employment.

The opposition party (SRP) charged him for the illegal distribution of gifts to potential voters back in January. Such practice is in violations of the NEC’s policies.

This is the first time that this kind of charge is filed before the communal council members election, scheduled for April of this year.

While NEC's Secretary General, Tep Nitha cannot be reached for comment, Mao Monivan, a SRP legislator in Kampong Cham welcomes NEC’s quick intervention.

Cambodia NewsFirst Husband, Now Wife, Takes Refuge in Singapore
Posted by AutumnLotus on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 (17:17:50) 300 reads

VOA Khmer
Washington

Nhin Sotheavy, wife of former police chief Heng Pov is seeking refuge in an unknown location in Singapore, her husband’s lawyer tells VOA Khmer Wednesday.

Nhin Sotheavy, along with her three children reportedly went into hiding after Cambodian authorities had appealed to Singapore to have her deported back to Cambodia for suspected possession of counterfeit US dollars.

"I cannot contact her because she’s afraid of her safety, and we don’t want what happened to her husband to happen to her”, N. Sivanathan added.

Last year, the former Phnom Penh commissioner fled from Cambodia to Singapore and then Malaysia. The Phnom Penh court charged him of a number of serious crimes. In December, Malaysia sent Heng Pov back to Cambodia, and is now detained in Prey Sar prison.
